Julia Jones was born in Woodbridge, Suffolk. Her parents both loved sailing and when Julia three years old they brought Peter Duck, a yacht that had been built for Arthur Ransome, author of the much-loved Swallows and Amazons adventure series. Julia slept in the place that had been designed for Ransome to store his typewriter and it wasn’t long before she was reading her way through his stories.
Boats and books have been part of her life ever since.
As an adult she founded and ran a village bookshop and developed a local publishing list for older readers. She edited four oral history volumes for Age Concern Essex and built up the Essex Community Programme as a tutor-organiser for the WEA (Workers’ Educational Association). While still a bookseller she became close friends with Joyce Allingham, sister of Essex detective novelist Margery Allingham, and has written and edited three biographical works connected with the Allingham family. The fourth (and last) in this series, Fifty Years in the Fiction Factory: the working life of Herbert Allingham 1867-1936, is now published.
The Salt-Stained Book and A Ravelled Flag are her first novels for younger readers – ‘a Swallows and Amazons for the 21st century’ as one reviewer described them. It’s been thrilling to discover that adults also enjoy them. Ghosting Home, the concluding volume in the Strong Winds Trilogy, will be published in July 2012.
Julia has five children and (currently!) five grandchildren. She lives in Essex with her partner Francis Wheen.
